As a WordPress beginner, the very first thing you need to learn is how to install a WordPress plugin. You can add new features and functionalities to your blog through plugins. To get access to plugins in WordPress.com – you have to upgrade business plan. In WordPress.org, you can install any plugin you want. There are three types of methods to install WordPress plugin:
1. Install a Plugin using WordPress Plugin search
Go to the WordPress admin area. Click on plugins. Click on “Add new”. You will see the following screen.
Type the plugin name or the functionality you are looking for. According to your search, you will see a bunch of listings. Let’s say you are looking for Floating Social Bar. You will get the following search result:
From search results, you can choose the plugin suitable for your choice. After selecting the right plugin, click on “Install Now” button. WordPress will download the plugin for you. You will see the success message with a link to activate the plugin or return to the plugin installer. The plugin will not work on WordPress if you don’t activate the plugin link.
2. Install a plugin using the WordPress Admin Plugin Upload
To install the paid plugin, upload method is used. The first step is to download the plugin from the source. Next, go to the WordPress admin area and select Plugins. When you click on “Add new” page – you will see an “Upload Plugin” button. Click on it and plugin upload page will open. Click on the choose file button. Select the plugin file you downloaded. Now click on the install now button.
After completion of installation, you will see a success message on the screen. Click on “Activate Plugin” and you are good to go.
3. Manually Install a WordPress Plugin using FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
FTP – File Transfer Protocol is a standard network protocol used for transferring files from your computer to server. If your WordPress hosting provider has file restrictions then it will limit your ability to install a plugin from the admin area. In this scenario, you can install the plugin manually using FTP.
The first step is to download the plugin’s source file. Next, you have to extract the zip file on your computer. One new folder will be created. You have to upload this folder manually on your website using FTP client.
Next step is to access your host through the FTP manager. In case, you don’t have your FTP username and password, contact your WordPress hosting provider. Open the FTP client on your computer. Connect it to your website using the log credentials. After connecting – access the path /wp-content/plugins/
Next step is – to upload the folder you extracted from the zip file.
After uploading the files, visit the WordPress admin area. Go to the admin menu. Click on the Plugins. Your plugin will be installed successfully on your plugin page.
All three methods are used to add plugins in WordPress. You have to choose the method as per your plugin requirement.
