Google bans cryptocurrency mining apps from play store

Recently after Apple, Google has now stopped permitting developers to submit apps that mine cryptocurrency on devices. Google has updated the developer policies for its Play Store to prohibit several categories of apps, targeting cryptocurrency mining applications and alongside many others.

Google Play Store’s policy update on apps reads: “We don’t allow apps that mine cryptocurrency on devices. We permit apps that remotely manage the mining of cryptocurrency.”

In April, Google banned cryptocurrency mining browser extensions from its Chrome Web store after the company discovered a vast majority failed to comply with its single purpose policy or were malicious. The report clearly stated that if Google will come to know of content with child sexual abuse imaginary, it will report it to the appropriate authorities and delete the Google Accounts of those involved with the distribution.

In just last month, Apple also updated its mobile application policy for iOS developers to prohibit any application that can be used for mining cryptos on mobile devices.  Apple also mentioned in its guidelines on App Store

“Any third party advertisements displayed on the apps should not have content related to cryptocurrency mining.”

Google announced new developer policies in the wake of rising cases of cryptojacking of devices with the practice increasingly being viewed as more lucrative than ransomware by malicious actors. In March, Google also announced that it would launch a crackdown on advertising content relating to Cryptocurrencies and related content.

Last month, Google banned cryptocurrency mining extensions from its Chrome Web Store to prevent cryptojacking by malicious extensions that mine digital currencies without users’ knowledge. Moreover, Facebook also banned all ads promoting cryptocurrencies – including Bitcoin and initial coin offerings (ICOs.) Twitter also announced its plan to block cryptocurrency-related ads on its platform.

What are your thoughts? Will Google continue to intensify or begin to reverse it prohibitive policies regarding cryptocurrency content in the new future?
