10 scientifically proven ways to be happier

What is happiness according to you? Are you happy? Well, happiness is an interesting concept. Everyone has their own definition of happiness. Everyone loves to be happier. Sometimes the path to find happiness may seem difficult. There are number of research results out there on how to be happier. There are lots of things you can do to make yourself happy. We have found some ways to become a happier person that are actually backed up by science:

1. Exercise more

Many studies have proved that exercise can be effective to fight against depression and anxiety. A 10-minute walk can brighten up your mood. When you exercise, your brain releases chemicals that mean you cannot feel sad as long as those chemicals are around.

According to one research, 7-minute workout turned out to be best practice. So if you think you don’t have enough time for exercise, go for 7-minute workout daily. Exercise helps you to relax, increase your brain power and improve your body image. Apart from happiness, you can stay healthier.

2. Help others

To make yourself happier, you should help others. You can set a goal of spending 100 hours per year to help others. When you spend money on others, you feel happier than buying stuff for yourself.

We understand that you will be so busy in your daily routine that you will not have enough time to help others. Still, take out some time to help people in need. Volunteering is a great way to help others. It gives you the satisfaction and joy that you could do something for the betterment of society. Kindness produces happy feelings. You don’t need to spend money to help others. Even a small act of kindness can bring a smile to your face.

3. Spend time with your friends and family

Spending time with your friends and family is highly valuable when it comes to improving your happiness. Many studies found that we feel happier when we are with our friends and family. Having many connections on social media is great. But real life connections matter a lot.

To make yourself happy, reach out to someone who is close to you. Call a friend or family member you haven’t talked to in a while. Talk about anything you like. Develop good relations with your friends, family, and neighbors.

4. Let go of perfection

Insisting perfection in every area of your life will make you feel frustrated. To be happy, you don’t need to wait for perfect career or perfect lifestyle. Be satisfied with your life. Basically, there are two types of people – satisficers and maximizers.

Satisficers become happy once their criteria are met. They become happy when they achieve what they want. In contrast, maximizers look for every single option available to meet their requirements. They spend more time and energy to find perfect. Therefore, satisficers are happier in compare to maximizers. Sometimes good enough can give you happiness rather than keep on looking for perfection.

5. Pay attention to good

Life is never easy. There are two things you can do – keep on complaining about life or start to embrace life as it is.  Find something good in your life. Those moments will make you happy even in the hardest time of your life.

As people say everything happens for a reason.  When something bad happens in your life, think about the lessons you learned and the experiences you could have. The old example you must be knowing – don’t focus on half empty glass of water. When you look for positive in everything, you automatically start to feel happy.

6. Embrace the outdoors 

Spending time in the fresh air can improve your happiness. Every day spend some time outside of your workplace and home. Go to the garden, take a walk. According to a study by the University of Sussex – being outdoors made people happier. Explore natural places and go out of the urban environment.

In another study, it was found that spending 20 minutes outside in good weather can boost your positive mood and improves working memory.  One study also found that happiness is maximized at 13.9 °C. Temperature definitely affects your mood.

7. Fake it till you feel it

People can easily spot the difference between a fake smile and real smile. Smiling is a good way to reduce the distress caused by an upsetting situation. Forcing a smile when you don’t feel like it is enough to lift your mood slightly.

8. Write down what you are grateful for

Gratitude is associated with greater happiness. There are many ways to practice gratitude. For example, keep a journal and write down the things you are grateful for every day. One study found that a conscious focus on blessings has emotional and interpersonal benefits.

People who keep a gratitude journal, become more optimistic and feel better about their lives. You can write thank you note to someone or thank someone mentally. Count your blessings every day. Express your gratitude – it will make you happy.

9. Be okay with who you are

Don’t be so hard on yourself. Your mistakes are the opportunities to learn. With self-acceptance, you will be happy and satisfied with your overall life. Notice the good things in you. We all habit of being kind to others but not to ourselves. Accept yourself with all the flaws in you.

Don’t get upset by the mistakes you made and the bad experiences you had. Embrace yourself as you are. You cannot make everyone happy. Stop caring what other people think about you or you will end up with disappointment and sorrow. Focus on making yourself happy and accepting yourself.

10. Buy happiness

Spending money on your favorite activities is not the only way to be happy. You can spend money on experiences. Go travel. As experiences become the part of ourselves. Spend money on the activities like staying in closer contact to your family, taking care of your health and self-development.

Buying materialistic things and having a luxurious lifestyle is not the only way to feel happy. When you spend money on the activities, experiences and things you love is worth it to feel happy.
